OS X Update

I have recently noticed that my Safari needs to be updated on my MacBook. I need to update to the OS X Operating System and I want to make sure that this will not do a "restore" and get rid of the documents I currently have on my MacBook. Is the upgrade to the OS X operating system safe to do or should I be backing up all my files before going ahead with it? Please help clarify. Thanks.
