No sound from speakers but no red light

Hey everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) and as of recently my speakers do not work. I tried a PRAM reset and it did not help. However when I turn the computer off and turn it back on I do get the startup sound from the speakers. It seems like it is stuck in "digital out" however sometimes the red light in the headphone jack comes on and other times it doesn't. I've never had this problem before and would appreciate any help in resolving this issue.

if you hold down the option key and click on the speaker icon on your screen you will see all of the available options for audio input and output. try messing around in Audio MIDI, see if something is stuck there...should be 44.1 khz 16 bit sound, or there abouts. try reparing permissions and see if that does anything good
