ttrying to back up my iPhone 4s on my MacBook OS X when plugging usb in initially iTunes gave me an unknown error message and then nothing my iphone will not show up on my computer anywhere. All software, computers and iTunes is most recent and up to date what do I do now

So it sounds as though your immediate issue is that your iPhone is not recognized by iTunes when it is connected to your computer. Is that right?
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in one of these two articles, depending on the type of computer you have -
For Mac - If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac.
For Windows - iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows.
