ios updates
So I can not update my ipod 4 past ios 6 but most of the apps are requiring ios 7 or higher to operate. So basically this ipod will be useless and I will be forced to buy a newer modle. Correct?

IF you want apps that require iOS 7 yes. I use my 4th gen iPod touch for audiobooks, music, and iBooks mainly. It won't be totally useless, you just won't be able to update apps or get new apps for the most part.
