ITUNES COULD NOT BACK UP THE IPHONE BECAUSE THE PHONE WAS DISCONNECTED

when trying to backup or sync my iphone on my itunes i continue to get a message right when its on the 4th step that "itunes could not back up iphone bcause the phone was disconnected." Anyone had/have this problem and know any to resolve it?
