Does exporting an image to a photobook or ema image?

Does exporting an image (copying) to a photo book or email, for instance, degrade the original image?

depends on the export options you choose - it may or may not and the choice is up to you

Exporting has no effect at all on the original image. All operations in iPhoto are performed on a virtual version of the image. So edit, export, print or whatever, the original image is still preserved.

As to a "lossless" version: there is only one - the Original. File -> Export -> Original

Obviously that does not get any edits you made. If you want to export an edited version then a little loss is not terribly important - depending on the use you have in mind. Basically, unless you'e planning to edit the jpeg in another app after export, it matters little as you're never more than a single generation from the original. With any reasonable quality image you would need to go through several edit cycles to see generational loss.

was written about iPhoto, and some minor details are different, but it's 98% true of Photos too.

Thanks, Larry. What is the loss less way to export images from i Photo, since I have a choice?

Export the original and you have exactly wha you imported with no losses

Export a TIFF and you have the edited version with no loss (but a very large file)

Export a JPEG with maximum quality and you have the edited version with virtually no loss and a fairly large file

as you decrease the quality (which is really simply increasing the JPEG compression) you get smaller file with more last photo data

Only you can make the trade off between size and quality
