When I hold my iPhone 6 near an NFC reader nothing shows up, despite having successfully added a valid debit card in passbook (which I can see when I open the application). This has happened in multiple stores, even when they explicitly note that they accept Apple Pay.

You need to hold a finger on TouchID whilst holding phone near the terminal, this should make the device wake up.

I don't think just holding the phone nearby will work.

I have had issues at one or two places, though it has turned out that the readers didn't accept the plastic card either - must be broken readers.

On the whole, I find Apple Pay to be working typically everywhere.

If it still doesn't work, perhaps a backup and restore may be in order.

Or perhaps the device is faulty.

BTW, did you enter the validation code after adding card to Passbook?

Sometimes the iPhone takes a few seconds before it registers and wakes up with the Apple Pay app once it is within range of the terminal reader, just keep your iPhone near the reader for longer and it WILL eventually wake up, do not do what most people do when the iPhone does not wake up immediately is move the handset away from the terminal reader and then back to it again, that will confuse both the terminal reader and the iPhone.   Sometimes people need to be patient.

    Has it ever worked?

What stores are you trying at?

I've tried holding (not pressing) my finger on the touch ID whilst placing the phone near to the reader... it still fails to wake up. I've also tried going into passbook and authenticating touch ID to achieve the "Hold near reader to pay" message, but still no luck! The card is also successfully validated :/

Thanks for your advice. I went back into a number of stores today to see if holding it near the reader for longer would work, but I'm afraid it didn't. I place it on serval contactless readers for 10-15 seconds and nothing! :/

Backup your device and make an appointment at a Genius Bar. Assuming the device is faulty you ought to still be within the warranty period.

Have you tried 're-booting' your iPhone by pressing and holding down, both, the power and home buttons together until you see the white Apple logo appear on the screen?
