Q: Photos will not upload from new System Photo Library on my Mac to iCloud Photo Library

Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.4

Photos for Mac Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)

Recently I had to restore a copy of my Photos Library from a Time Machine Backup because my original Photos Library started having corruption-like issues after importing three or four very large TIFF files that I needed to edit. It would not close and started hanging whenever I tried to edit a photo. I tried to repair my Library two or three times, deleted the large TIFF files, but the problems kept on. So I restored a copy of my Photos Library from a Time Machine Backup from before the problem started (using the Save Both Libraries option (current and restored)). I named the restored library "Photos Library Restored" in my Pictures folder. I followed the instructions to make "Photos Library Restored" my new System Photos Library in Photos. The photos started to upload to iCloud Photo Library (blue progress bar got about 1/3 of the way across when I had to do other work stopped watching), but it stopped at some point, then apparently tried to restart at the beginning. And then got permanently stuck. I see "Uploading 11,353 items but no progress. There has not been any progress for three days. If I select Pause for one day, I see 11,504 items to Upload (note the number changes). If I select Resume, the number changes to Uploading 11,353 items again, but still no progress.

Now when I import a new photo from my hard drive on my Mac into my Photos Library on my Mac (like a photo that I take with my DSLR camera), the photo appears in Photos-Moments and in the All Photos album on my Mac BUT NOT in Photos-Moments and in the All Photos album on my iPhone 5 and on my iPad Air 2. If I take a new photo with my iPhone 5, it appears in Photos on my iPhone 5, and in the All Photos album on my iPhone 5, but not in Photos or in the All Photos album on my Mac or on my iPad Air 2. So somehow the syncing between my devices has somehow gotten messed up by changing the System Photo Library on my Mac, even though it was simply a restored version of the original System Photo Library (with a new name) minus 3 or 4 days worth of photos that had been taken on my iPhone 5 in between. Also, all of the photos appearing in my restored Photos Library on my Mac have "Show referenced file in Finder" greyed out, as though the Photos app on my Mac can no longer locate them on my hard drive (even though they are, in fact, there in "Photos Library Restored" in my Pictures folder, and do appear on the screen in the Photos app).

I need help to fix both the syncing problem across devices and the referenced file problem, and I want to be sure that I do not lose my original and edited versions of my photos, most of which were taken with my iPhone 5, and are only stored in my Photos Library on my Mac and in my iCloud Photo Library (except for photos that I take with my DSLR camera and save to my hard drive first before importing them to my Photos Library on my Mac). For my iCloud Photo Library, my Mac was/is set to "Download originals to this Mac". My iPad was/is set to Download originals to this iPad. My iPhone (where I take most of my pictures) was/is set to "Optimize Photos for this iPhone" (due to storage capacity issues).

Do I have to turn off iCloud Photo Library off on all of my devices, then turn it on again to get my iCloud Photo Library to sync properly on all devices again? I am concerned that if I do this, I will lose all photos on all devices, since my Mac seems to be stuck and unable to upload the photos from my "new" restored System Photos Library. And when I tried to uncheck iCloud Photo Library on my Mac, I got a warning message saying that all photos that were not finished downloading from iCloud Photo Library would be deleted from my Mac, so I thought better of doing that and selected Cancel.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

A one week troubleshooting session with Apple Support finally solved this problem. It had to do with a keychain issue that was resolved. My iCloud Photo Library is now syncing fine across all of my devices.
