my son purchased a brand new macbookpro he has images stored in iphotos album on old mac but he is unable to find them on new mac, is yosemitie compatible with iphots.

He needs to get a copy of the iPhoto library on the old Mac located in ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library and migrate/import that library into the new Photos app on his new computer. If he doesn't want to import the entire library because it was shared by others using that Mac, then he needs to export the photos he wants onto an external drive and import them on his new computer through the Photos app.
