How do i link an apple ID to my macbook?

My macbook had to have OS X reinstalled on it and the genius at the bar skipped the step where you sign in with your apple ID. I have read several places to go through System Preferences -> User & Groups and edit from there however i do not have that option when i get to my user account?? Nowhere can i add an Apple ID?
