how do i get music from my usb onto my phone

my friend made me a mixtape and i want the songs on my phone. ive already tried to do the whole "file, add to library (then selected the file)' but it didnt work, ive saved the file onto my laptop and it still wont work. i have a macbook air and an iphone4s
