Use the application that came pre-installed on your iMac. If you are using OS X 10.10.3 or later use Photos, you can easily save the library on an EHD, many (including me) do that and have been for years.
Thanks. A large enough EHD Seems the best option. And every few years replace with new EHD for new photos?
Or just add another EHD.
A hint: organize your content now while you have a chance! iPhoto does this particularly well/

Of course not, just get good size EHDs (you can 6TB EHDs now) and ensure they are backed up.
Tx guys - any suggestion on large, reliable EHDS? There is talk the wireless option but seems wired ones are more reliable?
Evertbody is suggesting LARGE EHD. I would suggest, in light of low prices, 3 terabyte, That is size of mine.
Tx Bruno - any suggestions on which one? Samsung? Lacie? There is also this talk about getting a wireless EHD so you have your own "Cloud" - any thoughts on that? Barracuda was the one recommended.
It is Western Digital. I bought it some couple of month ago for under $100. With WD I had good experience and price looked to me right.
I/d recommend these (I have several Mercury Elite Pro):

Personally, I prefer slightly smaller drives, but more of them - the reason being that all drives fail at some point, so I want 2 copies of everything I have on two different drives rather than all of it on one. As for WD, their drives are fine; their enclosures are very cheap though which may present a problem down the road. I also would not go wireless for large file sizes unless you have an ultra-fast internet connection.
Thanks guys ! Appreciated.
