Tthe reason you get boilerplate answers is because your problem is specific to you, it's most likely a networking issue or something that has broken because you installed an update over corrupted files and you may need to try a bunch of things before you resolve YOUR problem. The Apple TV 1 works with the latest software, Apple haven't screwed anyone and even if the first Apple TV did no longer work, it ain't no big deal, it's nearly 9 years old now.

It is indeed, in some respect it seems a long time ago now, in others it doesn't. I can't remember now, did you join in before it was released.
