Transfer library

We used to have our iTunes library set to our external hard drive from our desktop. The desktop died. Now when I try to access the library on the external hard drive from our laptop, it won't link to it. Even when I go in and change the path to the library to the external drive, it shows nothing in iTunes. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
