Q: Missing Old Themes On New iMac?

I recently installed only iDVD on my new iMac using Yosemite 10.10.3.  I noticed that all of the "old themes" did not install.  Is there a way to get those gems back? The software tells me to update by clicking on the download button but that takes me to the App Store which tells me everything is up to date. 

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), MacPro Dual-Core, 2.66 GHz

It's not the age of the Mac that's the problem. 

 

What did you use to install iDVD on your Mac?  An iLife disk?  If so which disk? 

 

If it was iLife 11 try this:

 

1 - delete the iDVD application.

2 - move both of the iDVD folders to the Desktop that you installed earlier. 

3 - using the iLife 11 disk do a custom install of iDVD again.

4 - find the iDVD folder and replace the themes folder with the Themes folder containing all of the themes.

5 - boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot normally.

6 - launch iDVD and make sure the Advance preference pane is pointing to the Themes folder. 

7 - check the themes to see if the older themes are being recognized

 

If that fails the only other way to get all of the themes activated again is to remove all iDVD files again and install from an iLife 09 disk which contains all of the themes.

    The themes were located in the HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD folder on your old Mac.  If you still have the old Mac locate that iDVD folder and move it to your new Mac, replacing the iDVD folder that was created when you installed iDVD.  (The iDVD folder may be located in your Home/Library/Applications folder it it was installed just for one account and not all accounts).

     

    Once you've moved the folder launch iDVD, go to its Advanced preference pane and add the Themes folder (inside the iDVD folder) to the list of where to look for themes.

    Also try putting the same iDVD folder in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support folder and point to it in iDVD's Advance preference pane.  See if that will get a link working.

    Thank you so much for your effort with this issue.  I haven't been able to figure out a way to get the Advance Preference pane to allow me to list the Home/Library/AS folder in the pane.  When I do show the route to the folder and click OK the pane just stays with what is already listed.  Beginning to think the issue is that the Retina iMac is too much for the "old gems" section of iDVD.

    NOTE: IIn Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

     

    For Mavericks and Yosemite you can also go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring up this window:

    Well, if any good comes from this marathon, it is that you helped me get the home/library folder showing.  I did point to the folder as you suggest but it remains the same icons as identified with the earlier screen shot (yellow exclamation point).  I am including a screen shot to show you that I was able to follow your very good directions and point to the proper themes folder.  Again, thank you for not giving up on me but it appears that my Retina iMac may be too much for the "old gems'.

    Hey OT,

    No change which means that I need iLife 09 because I have been using iLife11 for this.  I won't be buying iLife09 for a program that is on life support.  I really appreciate your efforts with me.  This reflects what Apple Support Discussion is all about thanks to caring individuals like you.  I listed this as solved because I believe that we have reached that point.

    One last attempt at a solution: Try this basic troubleshooting fix:

     

    1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your

    User/Home/Library/Preferences folder.

     

    2 - delete the contents of IDVD'S cache folder: User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD.

    3 - launch IDVD and try again.

    Hey OT,

    No go with the last suggestion.  The yellow icon with the exclamation point continues to appear.  It appears that your recommendation that iLife09 was needed looks to be the route to go which means this is the end of the road for me.  Strange because Themes 6 and 7 have always worked but not Themes One through Five which probably is the reason we need iLife 09 to get all of the old gems to appear.  Again, thank you for your help!
