why is air play streaming jittery

I have just purchased an apple TV box and have linked it to my macbook pro. When streaming video from the web the sound and pictures freeze and jump on the TV but not the mac. The devices are about 2.5 m apart with nothing between them.

MacBook Pro, The mac is just over a year old

That is not entirely true. Between these two devices you have your Router through which is going your whole network traffic (unless you are using peer-2-peer connection).

All depends, what you are trying to watch. Some content might be to heavy (1080p/720p) or might not be optimised (Flash content) for Airplay Mirroring and as a result video and sound would be jittery.

There is a few things that you might try... First, try to cycle power on all of the devices which are participating in your setup: MacBook Pro, Apple TV and your Router. Then, turn on your Router first and wait when is fully ON. Then, turn on your Apple TV and MacBook Pro and test it again. If issue still is not resolved, if your MacBook Pro has Retina screen, try to use "default" resolution (looks like 1440x900) instead of "More Space" resolution (looks like 1920x1200). If still the same, if possible try to change the quality of Video that you are watching (try like 480p or less).

In some cases, switching off the bluetooth on your MacBook Pro helps too.
