Should i just update to 10.10
Prior to upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, backup all your important data.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
You can upgrade to Yosemite if your Mac meets the requirements > How to install OS X Yosemite on your Mac - Apple Support
Mavericks (and Mountain Lion) are only available if you you previously purchased/installed them.
Only the 2008-2012 Mac Pros can be updated beyond Lion unless you do a hack. You do not have a 2013 Mac Pro since those initially came with Mavericks.
The system requirements for Mountain Lion and later are all the same.

Mountain Lion to Yosemite is a big jump. Since you have a Mac Pro, you have four drive bays. Why not add another HD or SSD, clone your Mountain Lion installation to that, and then update the clone. See how you like it. If you do, make that your boot drive.
