Can you password protect an external hard drive in OS X Lion?

Hello, I am looking to purchase an external hard drive for my MacBook and have found that some do not offer any type of security functionality. Is there a feature in OS X Lion that will allow you to password protect the external hard drive so that no one can access the data except you? If not, is there an app that will accomplish this?
