Tried to transfer 20,000 of my iPhone photos into my Mac Book but when i open "photos" to import, they only list 13,000.
Next, all the photos appear as grey square and do not load at all.
I tried proceeding with the "import" button but it does not seem like anything is being imported at all, even after many hours.

You're going to have to do this in groups of 500 to 1000 images at a time.
Make sure there's enough available disk space to import that much data.
Click the Apple top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage

However, the photos don't even load before importing, just blank grey square spaces. Is that supposed to be normal?
Try selecting about 100 thumbnails at a time and rotate them 90º and then rotate them back to rebuilt the thumbnails.
