my iPhone 6 was working fine and then randomly requires activation??

My iPhone 6 which I've had for a year and has worked perfectly randomly requires activation after I had been in Italy for 13 days. Is this a serious problem? Will I lose all pictures I have taken?

What carrier SIM card is installed and what type of international roaming plan do you have? You shouldn't lose photos and data reactivating with a carrier. To be safe, you have been backing up to iCloud, right?
