Ipod Touch 4th Gen - IOS 6 - Imessage won't Verify

Hi,

I've got a new apple ID - applied it to the Touch, can login on app store, apply it to Imessage, tap next and it says verifying, then kicks me straight back to the login page.

Did the same on an Ipad Mini and it works without any issues - can anyone help?
