I can't play movies from 2010 iMovie on new macbook pro

I have recently upgraded my macbook pro from my 2010 model and have attempted to view/transfer my movies from my external hard drive which i used to back up my files onto my new macbook, but it won't transfer or play. Even when i open the old iMovie application they still won't play or import. Please can anyone assist. Thanks
