The Preview app is no longer opening PDF's that it used to open on my Macbook Pro (haven't tried my iPad yet) - how do i fix this? Thanks very much.

Are you double-clicking the PDF's? If so, have you tried opening Preview and using File>Open to select the PDF, or right-clicking on the PDF and choosing Open With if Open doesn't work?
I tried all of what you suggested and none of them worked. It should (and used to) just open by double clicking the PDF file. I was able to open it was Adobe so its obviously a problem with Preview (that has come about recently since it used to work). I prefer to use Preview over Adobe given all of the problems that Adobe causes on my Mac.
When you try to open a PDF from within Preview, does it give any kind of error message?

What does "Get Info" show about the specific information about the PDF?
What is the source of the PDF/what produced the PDF?
So you're saying that the error message from Apple's Preview is an advertisement for Adobe?
no idea. it has said that in the past and then opened under preview. just with a delay.
it looks like they were produced by Adobe Lifecycle.... but it has opened them in the past so even if it had to do with the software they were created on, why would it have opened them in the past, but not now? Shouldn't preview be able to open any PDF anyway regardless of the software it was created on?
If it worked before than it should still work. There a very few PDF creator apps fro which all readers do not work.
I would boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk
