You don't have enough RAM to run all of the applications you want to run in Yosemite.

Yosemite tries to keep all applications in RAM - killed applications are ended because they are not being used (instead of putting them into VM on disk)

Slow = trying to do too many things at once - and that includes things you may not know about - including updating Top Sites in Safari.

  1. Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
  2. Google products including Google Chrome will burden any Mac regardless of its age or configuration. It litters a Mac with a plethora of root level system modifications in the same manner as a virus would, if such a thing were to exist, which it doesn't. If you are required to use Google products, expect a very limited useful economic life from your hardware investment.

There's no question. Insufficient RAM. You can add 2Gb for sure, maybe 4Gb. Contact your national OWC outlet for their recommendations. Well known supplier here and decent prices.

Ideally you will need 2 X 2Gb because of the current configuration. You could experiment with replacing one of the 1Gb existing pieces with a single 2Gb piece if funds are short, which then would give you 3Gb.

You can actually increase your RAM to a total of 6 GB as 4 GB is considered the minimum with the current OS. Here are the specs for your machine:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.66-20-inch-al uminum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html

And here is the RAM for your model at the OWC website (this is their official US site, not an outlet):

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400

Although a matched pair is usually recommended for better performance; on this machine, it is ok to use a 2 and a 4 GB module. You should have at least 4 GB - more is better.
