I would like to find out whether am I still eligible to purchase Apple care protection plan for my Mac Air even after the warranty had expired for more than a year.

No. You must purchase it prior to the expiration of the standard 1 year warranty.
Like with a car warranty, once the warranty has expired it cannot be extended.
