screen sensitivity problem

I am trying to figure out why my phone buttons activate and change just by putting the phone to my ear for talking. It seems like the mute and speaker phone buttons are the ones that easily activate without really touching them. Is there a setting or sensitivity item that could cause this? Could there be a hardware sensor problem? Thanks in advance for the advice.
