Messages won't stay deleted- iPhone 4s, 7.0.4

Hi everyone! Looking for help for a problem I've had for a really long time. My messages in my iPhone are taking up most of my storage space. Most if not all of the messages are irrelevant, and I want to delete them all. They go back approximately 3 years, so it's a lot. Everytime I try to delete individual threads, the app freezes and goes blank white, and won't allow me to send or receive messages until I restart my phone. When I restart, I can send messages again and the messages I tried to delete are all back.

Also, my iCloud is full, so please don't add a solution that involves a backup to iCloud because I can't do that until the messages are deleted.

Thank you so much!

Hello lbopper77,

It sounds like your Messages app is becoming unresponsive when you try to delete message threads. I would quit the Messages and the Settings apps on your phone first:

Force an app to close in iOS

1. Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps.
2. Swipe left to find the app you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.

When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:

iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.

How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
