Also, simple AppleScript in an Automator Service can achieve the effects of simple Pivot Tables in Numbers, with no SUMIF or COUNTIF formulas required. (I say "simple" Pivot Tables because Pivot Tables in Excel are so enormously flexible and powerful.)

Counts by category or sums by category can easily be done with a click or two in Numbers. Say, for example, you have a column of various values, some repeating. Without requiring you to set up cells with formulas, a Service can quickly produce a list of distinct values and how often each occurs, similar to a Pivot Table. Sums by category can also be produced easily, without formulas, just by making a pick from the Numbers > Services menu.

If you are interested in that approach, post and I'll provide links to Automator Services that act like Pivot Tables. (They are easily installed).

Two separate Automator Services:

Count by Category (Dropbox download)

Sum by Category (Dropbox download)

To install each one, double-click the .workflow package and, if needed, click 'Install anyway' in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

Example Data table:

Category

Value

A

10

B

20

A

5

C

15

A

10

B

8

To use 'Count by Category':

  1. Select the range (A2:A7 in the example 'Data' table above) of cells containing the values you want to count.
  2. Choose 'Count by Category' from the Numbers > Services Menu.
  3. Click once in a cell where you want to place the counts (e.g. A2 in 'Counts' table shown below).
  4. Type command-v to paste.

To use 'Sum by Category':

  1. Select the two-column range (A2:B7 in the example 'Data' table above).
  2. Choose 'Sum by Category' from the Numbers > Services menu.
  3. Answer the prompts: 1 for 'CATEGORIZE by ... ' , 2 for 'SUM by ... '
  4. Click once in a cell where you want to place the counts (e.g. A2 in 'Sums' table shown below).
  5. Command-v to paste.
