imported library onto new pc, now ipod won't sync

I've finally gotten my itunes library the way i want it on my new pc. i went to sync my ipod classic 160 (5th gen?), itunes recognizes the device, then quickly auto-ejects it. i've tried rebooting, resetting the ipod, and using each of the 3 usb ports. i even tried using a different cable.

i saw on a different thread somebody said go to ipod>[settings] music, and check the box next to "sync music", and this worked for several people. i have to assume this was meant for a mac, because i can't for the life of me find any such option
