AHT not working

Hello,

I am running a late 2009 iMac with 10.10.3 running on it. I have a problem with heat, and I've been told to run the Apple Hardware Test on it. This is where it all went wrong. Everything that I found said that the only way to do it was to disconnect everything except for the mouse and keyboard (which I did), restart the computer while holding d (which I did) and hold d until it restarts (which I did). Now, this is where it all goes wrong. every time, the AHT doesn't work, it only works as a usual restart. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Try this

1) SHUT DOWN the computer (Don't RESTART... shut it down)

2) Hold down the OPTION + D keys

3) Press the Power Button (make sure to hold down the OPTION + D keys first)

4) Continue to hold down the OPTION + D keys until the system enters AHT mode

5) Let the app verify the hardware setup before initiating the test.

6) There are two testing modes. To select the "Extended Test" activate the check box below the Test button.

7) Press Test button to begin test
