I created an iTunes account using a Gmail address but never downloaded anything to it. I now have an active account with a different email address. Can I replace my current email address with the Gmail address since there's no music in it?

You should be able to, but you will need to remove it from the account that it's currently on first - if you don't have another email account to replace it with you can could create another gmail account (http://gmail.com), or hotmail (http://www.hotmail.com)
