After running Windows XP repair installation, I lost the ability to access all USB devices as Mass Storage Devices and am also unable to see them in product specific transfer applications. This includes the iPod and iTunes. The devices appear in device manager and are said to be working fine and yet they are not recognized by any application as being available. Can anyone at least help me regain access to my iPod? I've tried reinstalling iTunes and restarting the iPod but that does not make any difference.
I'm having the same problem. Before iTunes 7, I could reformat the iPod using the latest updater tool and it would usually work, could you? Now that isn't an option since updating is supposed to go through iTunes if I'm correct, but my iPod never shows up in iTunes to begin with. I've had this problem since day 1 with my iPod. I sent two back thinking they were faulty but I guess that isn't the case.
Then I started the computer in Safe Mode, went to Run under Start, put in quotes the exact file location of the file I downloaded above and then with a space after the quotes, put the word remove in. I clicked okay and it stated it couldn't verify the SPTD driver installation and to reinstall it. Well, I restarted and since then, all my USB devices work as they are supposed to work.
I was having the same problem and was banging my head until I remembered that instead of connecting my iPod directly into the USB jack of the computer, I was now passing it through a USB hub. I plugged the pod straight into the computer and voila, it was seen by windows and iTunes!
I had tried unplugging/plugging before so this simply action was not enough to fix it. I had to be the USB hub.
I've had an ipod nano for about a year. It had absolutely no problem, until these last few days. I plugged my ipod into the USB jack, like I usually do, and it didn't work! It didn't show up in iTunes or My Computer. Could you please help me? My email: softballinkatie@yahoo.com
I too am having the same problem as you are. I connect my ipod, as normal via the USB cable and iTunes does not pick up the ipod.
I rang Apple about this problem and they tried a number of things (thank you!), but unfortunately they did not solve my problem. I then reset my ipod and still nothing fixed!
I too have went through the five 5 R's, But my new ipod will not come up / or locate on the Source list on i tunes? I have looked in the Device Manager and it is not seen on there as well.
I actually went to the Apple store and the tech restore the ipod from her workstation and it has got to be something that I am missing on my computer.
I'm having the same problem with my new 30gb, Itunes doesn't see the Ipod, I've tryed everything, the 5 R, the selective start (enabling only itunes and quicktime), change of USB port, change of the name of the Ipod (from F: to H:), plugging the Ipod in disk mode, reinstalling Itunes, reinstalling Quick time, check of fonctionning of USB ports in the device manager, starting the Ipod service. Ipod appears as disk in windows correctly.
hmm i've got the same problem too, it didnt show up in my computer. Then i brought the ipod to apple centre and they said the usb cable got problem. They said the cable will be replace because it still in warranty and im still waiting for the cable now 🙂
I too cannot see the ipod in my computer or i tunes. You said you plugged it into the usb port directly. Please explain. I just bot mine, set it up, had a little trouble with i tunes but reinstalled it, did not get all my music and now musicmatch has an error, and now the ipod doesnt show up. I charged it last night and when I plugged it in to to add more songs the ipod is not recognized.
help. thanks.
Hey, I've had the EXACT same problem w/ my iPod 30g. I don't even know what happened to it!!! My laptop recognizes my brother's PSP when it's connected, but when I connect my iPod nothing happens. So it's not my computer---it's this iPod...Actually, if I try to connect my pod, after awhile my whole computer will just freeze up and I just disconnect the whole d%mn thing so I don't mess anything else up. I'm totally P.O.'d about this. I've spent $$$$ on songs and games that I can't even download to my pod. I've tried everything. I downloaded the new player and everything. I don't understand what could've just changed overnight to make my pod spazz like this!!..
I'll just hold my iPod real close tonight and cry until the morning comes, "I'm officially," sniff, sniff, " missing yoooooouuuuuu."<br>
Toshiba Satellite Windows XP
Sweeeeet!!!! I stayed up all this time hoping against hope that divine intervention would step in where Apple left me for (brain)dead...get this, I completely disconnected my pod and followed the steps for a reset (toggle hold, then simultn. press menu and the select (center) button; THEN (and this is immediately after the system began rebooting on my pod and I saw the glowy apple) pressed the select and play/pause button to set my pod as a disk or whatever manually (you'll see a throw-back check on the screen to know you did it right and it will say 'okay to disconnect'); THEN I plugged that tricky SOB in my laptop and ta-da!!! Updates flyin' everywhere!!!Hope this helps someone....
Thanks for the info, but it did not work. I have to call apple later, I think I need a new cable. I just bot this nano, received it on Wed. I tested my usb port with my old mp3 player and it is working. Lets see what apple says. will be back.
Thanks again.
