i phone 5s mail usage

Settings on the phone shows 198mb available with 4.6gb being used by mail even when all mailboxes are empty. When I connect the phone to itunes on my PC it shows I have a total of 7.6gb available. The same e-mail account on my ipad shows only a small amout of usage (around 150mb). Thjanks.
