Gimp 2.8.8 won't open

Question

I use a mid 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks 10.9.5. I downloaded Gimp 2.8.8 Mavericks.dmg. When I tried to open it, I got the following alert:

What should I do to get Gimp 2.8.8 to work on my Mac Pro?

Control-Click on the Gimp installer.

Select Open

This time you will get a prompt that allows you to continue with the install.

Either right-click on it to see the option to open it (same warning but it has Open as option) or,

Control + click if you don't have a two-button mouse.
