How to view all songs of an artist inside artist view

The most annoying thing about iTunes is that tracks only show up inside an artist's view when the album artist name is identical to the artist name. Isn’t there a way to change this? How can a piece of software that exists for over a decade be so inflexible?

Example: I want to listen to all tracks of artist XYZ. This is why I go to artists/XYZ (no, I don’t want to use that crappy search field!). I own 20 track of artist XYZ, but 10 of them are part of compilations (which means that these track’s album artist tag is either empty or “Various Artists”, etc). Hence, my artist XYZ view lists only 10 of 20 songs. How stupid is that!
