Locked out Ipadmini with old software

Hi all,

Hope someone can help. My daughter's ipad mini is locked- she forgot the passcode. We tried restoring through iTunes (i have fully updated itunes and OS) but it doesnt work because the mini OS is old and it wants to update the software on it. Problem is there isn't enough room on the mini for the new software - the message tells me to review the sync options on the ipad to make space but i cant as it is locked. Any advice on a workaround for this problem?
