MacBook Pro (mid-2010) cannot detect philips picopix 3614 (2014)

I recently purchased a Philips PicoPix 3614 projector (2014) but my MacBook Pro (mid-2010) running Yosemite 10.10.4 doesn't seem to be able to detect it.

I am running the signal from the Mini DisplayPort to the HDMI input. I have connected it up as instructed but when I go to System Preferences../Displays../Display there is only one display visible (from the laptop).

Any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
