Photos from my iPhone won't upload to iPhoto.

I recently just bought a brand-new mac book pro and when I try to upload my photos from my iPhone they don't seem to actually upload. It will say "uploading", but even after waiting several hours no new pictures are uploaded and the status bar/number of photos uploading has not changed. I have tried quitting iPhoto, disconnecting my phone and then reconnecting everything. I have also tried just uploading a couple of photos using the "import selected" option instead of "import all" and the status bar still doesn't move.
