I need to add an external HD to my Mac - how fast?

Greetings

My HD is full on my iMac and I need to move about 1TB of videos or photos onto an external HD, which I would be accessing on a fairly regular basis.

Do I need Thunderbolt? Do I need RAID for additional speed?

Ideally, I won't have too much of a performance decrease when moving all of my data to an external HD.

Thanks in advance!

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

That really depends on what you mean by accessing on a fairly regular basis. If your going to watch movies, or listen to music, then an inexpensive USB external will more then be able to keep up with your needs (get one that supports UASP).

If your a content creator and need to edit video or work with music and audio in realtime, then you may need a bit more performance. This could include Thunderbolt based storage, or RAID based or both. A bit more info will help in decding what will work well for you.
