Recently started using iBook Author. When I went to preview my work I received a message saying that my iBook software was to outdated for the preview to appear. Has this happened to anyone and does anyone now how to upgrade their iBook? I'm working on a MacBook Pro OS X 10.9.5

It happens to everyone who has not upgraded to Yosemite. That is the only way to get the updated ibooks app.
Instread of Preview, you can always just export to .ibooks format and transfer the file to your device and open it in the ibooks app.
