iPhone 3gs - Battery swelled up/exploded

I'm an owner of several Apple products, a few days ago I re-used an iphone 3gs and when I went to put it on charge I noticed it was exploded, the screen came out. I understand that the product is old and out of warranty, but it is not dangerous? The phone was working perfectly until a few weeks ago.
