I was charged 3 times for registering a new iTunes account. I purchased absolutely nothing, just basically registered.
Anyone know why? Is it just a type of confirmation?

Normally, you get charged only once. This is done to verify your card. You should get the money back within several hours/days.
If this doesn't happen, contact Apple Support.
