See the information below from https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201313

If the first 4 steps are exactly what you have already tried and that is not working, try the link in the last line.

    Delete synced photos

    1. In iTunes, locate and click on your device.
    2. Click Photos.
    3. Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    4. Click Apply.

I tried that and they did not leave my IPhone. I now have 3 downloads of all my pictures= 5,000 pictures. Sure is taking up a lot of memory.

Just to be sure we are talking about the same thing. You did exactly the following steps? I have never heard of that not resolving the problem or especially of it adding more than one photo after step 4.

    1. Create a folder on the computer that you now sync with, and add a single photo to that folder.
    2. In the Photos tab in iTunes, click the box next to "Sync Photos From."
    3. In the pop-up menu next to "Sync Photos From," choose the folder you created in step 1.
    4. Apply the change.
    5. Uncheck "Sync Photos From."
    6. Apply the change again.
    7. Your synced photos will now be removed from the device.

readerdiane, are you using iTunes on a PC (Windows) or a Mac? If on a PC, open the Windows File Manager and under Libraries > Pictures > My Pictures delete the iPod Photo Cache (iPod is correct, not iPad or iPhone) if there is one there. Now open iTunes and connect your iPhone. Select the phone and under Photos you should see a Sync Photos with no check mark. Put a check mark on Sync Photos and in the menu below click Selected Folders and then do not chose any folders below, i.e., leave all unchecked. Now do a sync and your pictures should disappear from the iPhone (only the ones you had synced before, camera roll will still be there).
