I'm runnint Yosemite 10.10.3, and connected my Nano 1.2, but my Mac doesn't recognize the device. Not even sure how to download the songs, but know it has to recognize the device first!

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPod is not being recognized. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
