how do I rename my Mac

I now have 2 MacBookAir laptops in the house.

How do I rename them so they have recognizable names?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Change the name in the Sharing pane of System Preferences.

Before posting this question I tried to use the sharing pane, clicked on "edit" but the changes I entered never showed up. Later I found that if I didn't click on edit the new names seemed to stick.
