Two Macs running OSX Lion, one in UK one in Turkey - can I video link the two computers via bonjour/iChat, or will I need something like AIM? Thanks for any help

    Hello Bill,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post it sounds like you are wanting to set up a video conference/chat between the two computers. The easiest method would be to use FaceTime. The following  article provides information on making sure your computers meet the requirements, one of which you meet by having OS X 10.7 Lion installed.

    Hi,

iChat will Connect for IM chats (Instant Messaging) over AIM or Jabber or even Yahoo if you have iChat 6

Messages takes over after iChat 6 and also gives you iMessages.

Bonjour is only for LAN based connections although technically you can set up VPNs and connect over the internet that way.

AIM Video or Audio Chats are started from th Buddy List (You and your Buddy have to have AIM valid Screen Names).

You may already have a Valid Screen Name if you have an Apple ID ending in @mac.com or @me.com if linked to iCloud or an @icloud.com one.

All of these only work though in iChat 6.0.1 or above due to security changes in the later versions.

Google run a Jabber server (originally called GoogleTalk) based on your Google Mail ID.

Facebook (if you enable Chat) give you a Chat ID  which is also run on Jabber server.

In the case of Text chats you can connect to whatever and wherever a Buddy is logged in (Phone, Browser, PC app and so on)

Video and Audio Chats are effectively Mac to Mac.

The Yahoo account that appears in iChat and above only does text chats (not even File Transfers).

iMessages is added to the set up and the app changes it's name to Messages.

It does many of the same features particularly in Yosemite's version.
