Changing Adobe Reader plist

Well you know the usual can't open because of not supported file type or corrupted. I found a work around from Adobe but I don't know where to find the plist to change.

Here is the work around...."

Solutions

There are two workarounds, depending on your use case:

PDF creators

If you manage or administer software that automatically generates PDFs, modify the way the PDF is produced. Make sure that no extraneous bytes appear before %PDF at the head of the file.

PDF consumers: Enterprise admins and end users

If you are a customer or an enterprise IT professional, you can disable the header validation on machines by setting the appropriate preference. You can set this preference per user in HKCU or at the machine level for all users in HKLM. You can use a similar method on Mac OS by modifying the same plist preference. If the AVGeneral key does not exist, create it manually.

The HKLM path is generically:

HKLM\Software\Adobe\(product name)\(version)\AVGeneral\bValidateBytesBeforeHeader=dword:00000000

For example, to change the behavior for Acrobat 11.0, create a DWORD at this location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\11.0\AVGeneral\bValidateBytesBeforeHeader=dword:00000000

The HKCU path is generically:

HKCU\Software\Adobe\(product name)\(version)\AVGeneral\bValidateBytesBeforeHeader=dword:00000000

For example, to change the behavior for Reader 10.0, create a DWORD at this location: HKCU\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\AVGeneral\bValidateBytesBeforeHeader=dword:00000000

Always change the product and version number in the preference path to match your installation. This method allows the PDF to display on machines you control.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks

.plist files or preference files are usually found in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.

Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder

Pick one of the following methods:

A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:

chflags nohidden ~/Library

Press RETURN.

B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.

C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:

~/Library

Press the Go button.

Ok Kappy, I changed the line in Terminal. My keyboard has no option key that seems to do anything....microsoft keyboard. I can open the Finder and I see the Go part. But no Library is listed there. So I went to my home page with the little house and found the Library there. So the Library folder is open but I don't see anything to change.

Aug 3, 2015 1:38 PM in response to Diane1349

Ok more research seems to suggest that it's an email problem in that it's encoded by my email company and then it doesn't decode correctly. Would work if it was a zip file. Double clicking on the link in the email places it on my desktop in a fashion that opens.

Thank you for your help....I'm giving up on any other fix since it seems not to be computer related.

Diane,

a plist is normally in a folder called Preferences, or in a folder called LaunchAgents or in a folder called LaunchDaemons; all these in a folder called Library.

There are TWO Libraries in OSX: startupdisk->Library and Startupdisk->Users->yourname->Library (this last one made visible by way of Kappy).

When I look at the Windows Register address I guess that the plist i in either a LaunchDaemos folder or a LaunchAgents folder. There is no indication at all in which Library: you have to look for an ...adobe...plist in all the folders.

There is however a method to find them easier:

download Etrecheck from www.etresoft.com,

it will produce a list, copy/paste the list here and if there is an adobe plist it will be there with its address.

I'd forgotten all about Etrecheck...used it several times dealing with logic board and battery issue. Here it is...lots of stuff I need to address. Many Adobe items of which I'm not sure what if anything to do with.

Yes, what I thought. You have some problems installed, that will corrupt your system, whatever you do with the Adobe plist:

I advise to really uninstall the following:

a. the AVG antivirus app: counterproductive and cause of issues. Do not install any antivirus app on a mac, bacause it interferes negatively with the built-in security. Restart after this and empty TrashBin.

b. the Seagate software: counterproductive too, and interferes with the disk handling in OSX. Restart after this and empty TrashBin.

c. uninstall Fancontrol, superfluous, and should not run continuously, delete FanControlDaemon also from Startupdisk->Library->StartupItems. Restart after this and empty TrashBin.

d. In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove all entries, with the minus sign. Restart after this and empty TrashBin.

You will have to start the apps by hand now and will only run when needed. Never start Adobe ResourceSynchronizer again: it will slow down your computer and it does not do anything for the Adobe apps. Also you do not need to start HP Scheduler ever again: the HP printers work perfectly correct without this running.

e. Uninstall Ghostery plugin in Safari. There is at this time only one adblocker that is still without suspicion: Adblock.

f. in SystemPreferences: uninstall Flip4Mac does not do anything for you anymore (maybe even outdated). I propose to uninstall FanControl too, see above.

g. You can safely remove the following internet plugins from StartupDisk->Library->InternetPlug-ins:

Flip4Mac when still there

CouponPrinter, adware

Both AdobePDFViewers, not as good as the built-in PDFviewers

RealPlayer, outdated

RL Security

Then Restart again.

Notes:

-- I am not sure all the Mcrosoft control apps are really OK, but I suppose they are.

-- And Yes, you have to restart every time I said, because you can better not combine some removals.

-- there are or were possibly compromised softwares on your mac. But after this the sysconf does not hurt, let it be.

-- I propose to download MalwarebytesAntiMalware (formerly AdwareMedic) from www.malwarebytes.org and run it, it will remove all adware.

-- Flashplayer is very unsecure, and new security holes come almost every day now. So I have removed it from my computers. Flash videos are old hat and most videos are readable now HTML5: In Safari->Preferences->Advanced set "show develop menu" then in that menu set UserAgent to "Safari iOS8 iPad": then Safari will play almost all because the iPad Safari will play all HTML5.

-- your Adobe problem may have gone away already now, report and when necessary we will explain where to find the plist and how to change it.
