iphone 4 stuck on iTunes plug in page

My iphone 4 went orange last night, shut down and is now stuck on iTunes plug in page. Have tried to update and recover via iTunes. It will go to apple page and scroll half way and then tells me it couldn't restore because of unknown error. Is there anything else I can do or is this phone declared dead?
