The link was interesting, but unfortunately not helpful. I'm hoping to use an old iPad to check mail and play music on my home network, but cannot download any apps or files from iCloud or my macbook to make it happen. Think that I know why; i.e., iOS 5.1 is obsolete, right? Any tricks I can use? Many thanks.

Apps that run on a Mac (OS X) cannot run on an iPad (iOS). Two different operating systems.
iOS v5.1.1 is outdated yes, but I have a first gen iPad also. I can check mail and play music no problems.
Unfortunately, Apple does not supply a list of apps that run on iOS 5.1.1.

am I looking at these correctly? I have the generation 1 Ipad and cannot go past 5.0. will it ever go past this or are we just stuck?
