I am trying to backup my iphone. I go to 'File' then 'divice' then 'backup' but the 'backup' field is greyed out. What do I have to do to get it working?

I am having the same problem as ronfrommackay. The links you show all indicate how to do a backup. But none of those will work if the backup now button or the file->device->backup are greyed out.
